Diabetes and Physiotherapy

Diabetes and Physiotherapy

Let’s start with the facts:

In 2015, it was estimated that approximately 1.5 million residents of Ontario currently suffer from diabetes and 2.27 million residents 20 years and older are in a pre-diabetic state. In a 2008/2009 report it was estimated that approximately 1 in 10 deaths of Canadian adults can be attributed to diabetes.

Thankfully, there are treatment options thanks to over 3500 years of research and knowledge. Above and beyond the medical discoveries and treatments, there are now holistic options such as yoga, holistic diets, and physiotherapy to just name a few.

How could a physiotherapist help you to manage your diabetes?

Because being active is such an important aspect of coping with diabetes, your physiotherapist can evaluate your current activity level and make a safe and manageable exercise program. They can teach you about possible red flags in your lifestyle and how they can affect your activity level. It is important to note that physicians suggest 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week.

Another important aspect of diabetes is the risk to the patient’s feet. Your physiotherapist can teach you how to properly monitor the skin on your feet, looking for decreased sensation in the area.
