Release Muscle Tension and Chronic Pain with Trigger Point Dry Needling
What Is Dry Needling?
Trigger point dry needling (also known as Intramuscular Stimulation) uses an acupuncture needle to help release a trigger point.
What is a Trigger Point?
When you think you have "knots" in your muscles, you actually have Myofascial Trigger Points.
You actually do not have real "knots" in your muscles! What you actually do have is a small area where the tiny fibers within your muscles contract or spasm. The area where the "knot" is has increased electrical activity and it is this uncontrolled electrical activity that causes the nerve to send messages to the muscle, telling it to tighten.
If you have a lot of trigger points in many areas, this condition would be called Myofascial Pain Syndrome.
These small patches of tight muscle bands/fibers actually cut off it's own blood supply. When this happens, chemicals are released that cause inflammation and pain, which affects the whole muscle and their nerves.
If your muscle is sore and it shortens because it is tight, you will not be able to move your joints as effectively and this will affect your mobility. Trigger points can cause pain in one specific area (we call these "latent trigger points") but can also refer/send pain into another area (we call these "active trigger points").
How does Dry Needling work?
When an acupuncture needle is inserted into a trigger point it creates a twitch response.
This twitch response decreases the electrical activity that was telling the nerve to tighten the muscle. When the trigger point relaxes, this eliminates the chemicals that cause irritation and inflammation.
Immediate improvement in your mobility, decreased pain and better joint function!
Does it Hurt?
Most people do not even feel the needle penetrate the skin. If your muscles are sensitive and are very tight because of the trigger point, you may feel a slight cramp when the needle causes the twitch response. This only lasts for a few seconds. You want the twitch response to happen since this tells you that the trigger point has relaxed!
If you want to get rid of those trigger points and get long lasting relief then Trigger Point Dry Needling may be for you!
